Megan Olveren The Making of a Momo

Trained chef, recipe developer, writer, budding photographer, project manager, wife, mama.

I have always been the adventurous type. I left home when I was 17 years old and moved to Australia as an exchange student. It was there that I was bitten by the travel bug (and luckily none of those dangerous spiders) and I have been exploring the world ever since.

As a trained chef, my biggest passion has always been food - cooking food, reading about food (M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, Jeffrey Steingarten, Brillat-Savarin) writing about food, taking pictures of food and trying out new ingredients. In fact, until quite recently, I had saved every single issue of my Bon Appetit Magazine from 1996. I used to spend hours in the kitchen cooking together with my Gran when I was little - potato soup with leeks was my first real masterpiece. I am notoriously bad at writing down recipes because I tend to make things up as I go along. I believe cooking is a creative process and you must taste as you go because ingredients can vary...some salt is saltier than others, certain types of ginger can have more of a bite than others, etc. Recipes should be used as a guide, or for inspiration, but in the end, you must rely on your senses to guide you. Baking, on the other hand, is a whole other ballgame whereby, you need to play by the rules.

I am a mom to a little boy who keeps me on my toes, but most of all, he keeps me curious, and I love cooking for him. I grew up in Delaware (USA) before moving to Gothenburg, Sweden, where I lived for 10 years (and I am married to a Swede). I am currently living Singapore - a city which I have grown to love and a city which inspires me each and everyday with its delicious food, its people and its culture.
